Warhorse Studios Unveils Open-World Lord of the Rings RPG

Warhorse Studios announces its development of an open-world RPG set in Middle-earth, alongside a new Kingdom Come adventure.

The long-speculated Lord of the Rings role-playing game is officially in the works at Warhorse Studios, the developers behind the acclaimed Kingdom Come: Deliverance. This morning, the studio announced on X, "it's time to reveal what we are working on," confirming the ambitious project as an open-world Middle-earth RPG.

Rumors about this project have circulated since late 2025, gaining traction in March. This announcement coincides with parent company Embracer Group’s renewed focus on Middle-earth narratives, especially under its Fellowship Entertainment subsidiary, which has been restructuring studios to foster collaboration. The recent news that Amazon is exploring a Lord of the Rings game experience may have also prompted Warhorse to make this formal announcement now.

While specific gameplay and storyline details are still under wraps, expectations are high based on Warhorse's previous work. Kingdom Come: Deliverance featured a richly detailed open world, immersive historical realism, and compelling narratives. If Warhorse opts for a similar approach, players can look forward to a vibrant and expansive Middle-earth, complete with intricate lore and engaging quests.

Details on project leadership remain unclear. Daniel Vávra, co-founder of Warhorse and a key figure behind the previous Kingdom Come titles, has shifted his focus to a film adaptation of the game. Despite stepping back from game oversight, Vávra's co-ownership of the studio indicates he will likely still play a significant role in the development of this new RPG.

As excitement grows around this announcement, fans of the franchise eagerly await more updates regarding the project’s development and release timeline. Warhorse has promised to share additional details when the time is right, hinting at a deep engagement with Middle-earth that could attract both RPG enthusiasts and Tolkien fans alike.
