With the unveiling of its AI smart glasses at the Google I/O developer conference, Google is making a bold move into the competitive arena of wearable technology, directly challenging Meta's dominance in the market. These new glasses, powered by Google's Gemini artificial intelligence, aim to enhance how users interact with their surroundings.
Developed in partnership with Samsung Electronics and eyewear brands Gentle Monster and Warby Parker, the glasses feature built-in cameras and speakers. This design allows users to engage with Google’s Gemini AI assistant, which can deliver information based on what the user is seeing. For example, the AI can retrieve reviews for nearby restaurants, offer navigation directions, or even describe complex cloud formations. These capabilities position Google’s product as a versatile tool for both casual users and tech enthusiasts.
This launch marks a significant escalation in the competition with Meta Platforms, which has heavily invested in making smart glasses a mainstream product through collaborations with Ray-Ban and Oakley. In 2022, over 7 million units of Meta's smart glasses were sold, highlighting a growing market interest. However, Google’s access to extensive search engine data and its suite of services, including Google Maps and email, may give it an advantage in providing a more integrated user experience.
While Google showcased prototypes of AI glasses with small displays last year, this year’s presentation did not mention a launch date for those models. Instead, the focus was on the Gemini-powered glasses, highlighting practical AI applications in everyday life. Media reports indicate that Apple is also developing smart glasses, with expectations of releasing models without displays soon, which could further heighten the competition in this emerging market.
As the market for AI-enabled wearables expands, Google’s new smart glasses could transform how users engage with technology daily. With a release planned for later this year, it remains to be seen how effectively these glasses will capture consumer interest and whether they can secure a significant share in a space already dominated by Meta’s products.
