Apple Watch Series 12 Expected to Deliver Minor Updates and Refinements

The anticipated Apple Watch Series 12 could be a modest upgrade, lacking significant design changes or AI features. According to Bloomberg's Mark Gurman, the 2026 model will focus on general performance enhancements and software refinements rather than notable additions.

This year’s emphasis appears to be on incremental updates, a trend seen in recent Apple Watch versions. While the smartwatch continues to excel in display quality and health tracking, innovation seems to be slowing. Many features now compete against earlier models rather than against rival brands.

Gurman states that the Series 12 will run on watchOS 27, which is set to debut at the Worldwide Developers Conference (WWDC) in June 2026. This new software version is expected to bring refinements, including a modular-style watch face inspired by the Apple Watch Ultra. This design aims to increase information density and customization options, although adjustments will be necessary to accommodate the standard Apple Watch’s smaller screen.

Despite earlier speculation about AI capabilities, the Series 12 will not feature on-device AI due to hardware limitations. Current Apple Watch models come with only 1GB to 1.5GB of RAM, which is insufficient for running advanced AI models. Instead, these devices may act as companions to other Apple hardware, displaying information processed externally.

In contrast, the previous generation, the Apple Watch Series 11, introduced user-friendly features such as wrist gestures, hypertension notifications, and significant battery life improvements. As the industry evolves, the Series 12's focus on software updates may be aimed at maintaining its competitive edge in a saturated smartwatch market, where brands like Garmin and Vivo are also vying for attention with their latest offerings.

As the 2026 launch approaches, the Apple Watch Series 12 must balance user expectations for performance enhancements while managing the limitations of its existing hardware. The ongoing focus on software improvements might keep the device relevant, but consumers may start to question the value of upgrading from previous models amid a series of modest updates.
