He recalled, "I told the other band members, 'Don't worry about the Ooh, ooh, Ahhhh haaa part, I can find words for that.' And they said, 'Don’t do that, that's the way it's supposed to be.'" Young reflected on the moment that led to the song’s recording, stating, "The label was going to drop us. When the label called and said they were going to drop Poco, our management said, 'You might want to go down and check out the new stuff.' The label came down and we played some new songs for them, 'Crazy Love' and 'Heart of the Night.' The minute we played 'Crazy Love,' they said we think you should go make a record. 'Crazy Love' kept the band going, because otherwise it would have ended there for sure."
