Alexa Russo Takes the Helm at Tampa Catholic Softball

This year marks a change for the Tampa Catholic softball team as Alexa Russo takes on the role of head coach. After establishing herself as a player, she is now poised to shape the team from the dugout. Russo's return to her alma mater is filled with excitement and determination, showcasing how personal passion and family support can drive success in sports.

Alexa expressed her enthusiasm about coaching at her former school, saying, "I always said I wanted to coach at a school I went to, whether that was here, but I am having so much fun being back at Tampa Catholic." Her words highlight a strong connection to the institution and a commitment to nurturing its athletic spirit.

The Russo family is closely connected, with several members involved in coaching at Tampa Catholic. Her father, Paul Russo Sr., leads the varsity baseball team, while her brother is part of the varsity coaching staff. This family support network has been crucial for Alexa as she adjusts to her new responsibilities. "I was nervous coming in and if it wasn’t for Paul, my dad, and my uncles and my cousins, I would have no idea what I would do for the smallest thing like a practice plan," she said, recognizing the invaluable guidance from her family.

The relationship between the two teams fosters a competitive yet supportive atmosphere. Paul Russo Sr. acknowledged the friendly rivalry, stating, "Yeah, there’s a little back and forth of who’s going to win one first, but regardless of who wins one first, it’s a Russo winning, so that’s good." This lighthearted competition reinforces the strong bond within the family, emphasizing that their ultimate goal is collective success rather than individual achievements.

Family support goes beyond emotional encouragement. They help Alexa with practical tasks, such as preparing the field for games. Paul Sr. remarked, "She’s got all of us around, we help her with the field, we help her get it lined, we help her get it dragged."
