Sigma’s New Telephoto Lens Patent Promises 125-700mm Range

A newly revealed patent suggests that Sigma is working on an ambitious 125-700mm telephoto lens, which could expand options for wildlife and sports photographers. This lens features a 2x teleconverter capability, allowing its reach to extend beyond 1500mm, making it notable in a market currently dominated by models like the 150-600mm and 100-400mm.

The patent, numbered P2026082399 and published in May, also includes designs for a 150-600mm f5-6.3 and a 100-400mm f5-6.3. Reports indicate that these new lenses are designed to suppress chromatic aberrations while maintaining a compact form factor, specifically addressing the needs of photographers who often work in challenging conditions.

While the prospect of an expanded telephoto range is appealing, the slower aperture of f6.3-9 on the 125-700mm lens presents challenges. Photographers may struggle to achieve optimal images in lower light, potentially necessitating higher ISO settings during fast-paced shooting scenarios. Still, the extended reach will allow wildlife enthusiasts to capture distant subjects, including elusive bird species and shy animals, in their natural habitats.

The existing Sigma 150-600mm lens has received praise for its performance, delivering impressive image quality with minimal aberration and good sharpness, all while remaining relatively lightweight compared to competitors. However, reviews have noted mixed performance, suggesting that there is room for improvement, particularly if Sigma plans to introduce faster options for the 100-400mm and 150-600mm lenses.
